Maia Luke
8th Grade English
Hi! My name is Ms. Maia Luke, and I'm new to New West this year as the 8th grade English teacher. I'm very much looking forward and happy to be joining this fantastic community of educators and families!
I am originally from the Bay Area. I moved to SoCal for college, and I'm a CSUN Alum, having gone there for both my English Bachelor's and my single subject teaching credential. Outside of school, you'll typically find me perusing local bookstores and coffee shops. There's nothing better than a warm drink and a good book or jigsaw puzzle on a cold day.
I have been passionate about reading and writing since I was very young and was drawn to teaching in my second semester of college. (Though, being an eldest daughter, I often feel I've been, in a sense, teaching my whole life.) It's my philosophy that every student deserves to feel like they belong within a curated environment of safety and kindness inside the classroom. I was drawn to middle school, as this can be a time of a lot of key development for many students, it's an opportunity to implement not only the state standards but also a genuine passion for their work in and out of class. It's my biggest goal for students to gain confidence in themselves and their abilities in English, and to feel as prepared as possible for high school and beyond.
I look forward to getting to know as many students, families, and fellow educators as possible in my coming time here at New West
