Maia Luke
8th Grade English
My name is Ms. Maia Luke, and I'm entering my third year at New West Charter as the 8th-grade English teacher.
Though I moved to SoCal for college, I am originally from the Bay Area. I'm a California State University - Northridge alumnus, where I received both my Bachelor's degree in English and my English teaching credential.
I have been passionate about reading and writing since I was very young, and I am committed to designing and delivering curriculum that is a combination of rigor and intrigue. I am drawn to middle school education for the unique opportunities to implement both in a broader sense.
It's my philosophy that every student deserves to feel like they belong within a curated environment of safety and kindness inside the classroom. Middle school can be a time of key development for many students, and is therefore an opportunity to implement not only the California State Standards in the classroom, but also a genuine life-long passion for and pride in their work. It's my biggest goal for students to gain confidence in themselves and their abilities in English, and to feel as prepared as possible for high school and beyond, whatever that looks like for each individual.
I look forward to continuing to get to know as many students, families, and fellow educators as possible in my time here at New West Charter.
