The New West Charter middle school is spectacular, both in its results and in the message that it is sending our neighborhoods – that it is possible for a public school in our city to provide a great education.

Davis Guggenheim’s letter to Los Angeles City Councilman Bill Rosendahl

October 11, 2011

Dear Councilman Rosendahl,

I’m the director of the documentary Waiting for Superman about our nation’s public schools, and I’m writing to you in support of the New West Charter middle school expansion project. After spending years chronicling our public schools, and in particular, the schools of Los Angeles, I believe that the greatest thing we can do is give parents and students educational options.

While I understand there are practical considerations such as traffic flow, real problems indeed, the opportunities for our families and our city are too great not to do everything we can. The New West Charter middle school is spectacular, both in its results and in the message that it is sending our neighborhoods – that it is possible for a public school in our city to provide a great education.

I believe, as a public official, there’s no greater purpose than to support this kind of reform, and supporting proven educators like those at New West Charter.

I would love to discuss this with you directly.

Sincerely,

Davis Guggenheim
