Admission Policies and Process

Number of Student Admissions

New West will be accepting applications for all grades 6-9.  The exact amount of students we will admit to each grade level is contingent on the outcome of our expansion project.  Final details about our expansion project will be available in March 2012 at the time of our lottery.  We hope that all interested families will come attend one of our open houses and decides to apply.

No Residency Requirement

New West is open to all students without regard to where they live in California, which school district they live in, or which school they currently attend.

No Application Fee, Tuition, or Donation Required

New West does not charge an application fee, does not charge tuition, and does not require a monetary contribution, pledge, or promise as a condition for application, admission, or enrollment.

No Admission Tests or Interviews

There are no admission tests, applicant interviews, or parent interviews required as part of the application process.

New West Open Houses

Parents of applicants must attend a New West open house as a mandatory part of the admission process (see Admission Dates; applicants are encouraged to attend). Open houses are held on evenings and weekends to help support all families to attend.

Application Form

The application form is only available by attending a New West admissions open house (see Admission Dates). The completed application form must be submitted before the application deadline.

Admission and Enrollment Process

Becoming a student at New West is a multi-step process:

1. Attend an Open House.
2. Application for Admission. Interested students must complete and submit their application by the application deadline (see Admission Dates). If too many students apply for the available spaces, then admission priority is determined by a public lottery.
3. Verification. Parents/Guardians must come to New West during the verification period (see Admission Dates) to verify their application submission and receive their lottery number.
4. Enrollment. Admitted students are mailed a notice of admission and an enrollment packet. The enrollment packet and all its required documents have to be complete and returned to the school by the enrollment deadline (2-3 weeks later) to confirm and guarantee their place at New West when school starts the next September.

Preferences

The following order of preferences is used to fill available spaces at each grade level (listed in declining order of priority; all students must go through the regular admission process and fulfill the regular admission requirements):

Siblings. Applicants with a brother or sister who currently attends New West. Applicants with a brother or sister who will be graduating from New West this academic year or who graduated last academic year. Or applicants with a brother or sister who has just been admitted through the ongoing admissions process. All eligible siblings must complete and submit their application by the application deadline. No excuses!

Socioeconomically Disadvantaged.Applicants who qualify for the free and reduced lunch program under the federal eligibility guidelines.  Applicants applying for this preference must submit proof of income (Social Security Number, W-2, Federal Income Tax Statement, and Most Recent Check Stubs) before the application deadline to be eligible for this preference. Those that qualify will receive double odds in our lottery.

Regular. All other students who wish to attend New West.

Admission Lottery

All students who submit a completed application form are admitted and enrolled unless the number of applicants exceeds the school’s capacity at a grade level. If there are more applicants than available spaces, then admission priority is determined by a public random drawing for each grade level with consideration given for the above admission preferences. The lottery is held at the school on the day listed under Admission Dates (attendance is not required).

Wait List and Late Applications

Applicants not admitted through the lottery have their name placed on a wait list in the same order they are selected in the lottery. Students on the wait list are notified immediately when space becomes available and have two weeks to complete and return the enrollment forms. Late applications are placed at the end of the wait list on a first come, first served basis based on the date the completed application form is received by the school office.

Home-School Contract

Parents of students admitted to New West must sign and agree to the terms the Home-School Contract as a condition of enrollment.
