Mission Statement

New West is committed to being an exemplary “green school” in order to minimize our use of natural resources; model good environmental practices for our students, teachers, families and community and encourage the school community to become better educated and active in building a sustainable planet. Current Projects

Recycle Program
Implemented school wide recycling program which includes paper, plastic, aluminum.

Techno Trash Drive in April
Families will be encouraged to recycle "techno-trash" including batteries, computers, cables, etc. by bringing them to school.

Beach Cleanup
6th Grade beach cleanup May 28th at Santa Monica Pier.

Light Bulb Project
Sell compact fluorescent bulbs to New West families to reduce home energy use and raise money for our other green programs.

Carbon Fund
Offset New West's CO2 (carbon dioxide) emissions through the Carbon Fund.

Trash Reduction
Encourage "waste free lunches" for New West students. Project will start at the March Student of the Month Assembly. More information to follow. Each classroom will be supplied with reusable party ware to eliminate paper plates, cups, and plastic cutlery.

Waterless Urinal Installation
Installed waterless urinals saving 120,000 gallons of water per year.

Outdoor Education
Outdoor education including trips to Joshua Tree, Yosemite and Catalina Island.

Green Cleaning Products
Utilize, non-toxic, biodegradable, "green" cleaning products.

Plastic Use
Created reusable grocery bags to promote New West families to shop.

Green Charter Schools Network
Joined Green Charter Schools Network, and plan to attend conference in October 2010.
