Subject: History | Website

If you are reading this, then you already know… this is my bio. I recently moved to L.A. from LA – to be more specific N'Awlins. After graduating from LSU with a secondary education major and minor in history, I taught in a New Orleans public school for 3 years. My first semester teaching was also the first semester for students after Hurricane Katrina. I will never forget the connections made with the students who experienced so much from the disaster. I know this experience will help me bring a little lagniappe to New West Charter Middle School.

My hobbies include sports, especially futbol, as well as biking, hiking, and photography. I am a huge New Orleans Saints fan – Who Dat! How could I almost forget my favorite hobby? I love to play with my itty bitty puppy, Quincy!

After tutoring my six-year-old niece throughout high school and seeing that gleam in her eye every time she conquered a word or solved an addition problem mentally, I quickly gravitated to the life of being a teacher. I spent my college years tutoring both low and high performing learners and implemented many after-school programs to entertain those who had working parents in the local middle schools.

Before moving to California, I taught one summer in inner-city Chicago, fell in love with the big city, and realized just how grateful I felt to have the privilege of working with children in need. Being a proud member of the New West Family, I look forward to working with each family to help create moments of wonder and inspiration and the joyous feeling of success.

Welcome to New West – a truly exceptional middle school! I am happy to say that I am beginning my 10th year as an educator, and my 5th year as a teacher at New West. In 2001, I graduated from The Colorado College with a major in Sociology and a minor in Women's Studies.  After college, I joined a program called Teach For America, and taught 4th grade for 2 years at Simon Elementary School in Southeast D.C. Following my 2 years as a corps member, I went on to teach at a public/charter middle school called KIPP DC: KEY Academy. I then returned to Los Angeles and worked as a Teach for America Recruitment Director at UCLA, USC, and UCI for one year.  During this time, I realized that the place I truly wanted to be was inside the classroom where I could more directly affect student achievement.  So, I returned to the classroom and taught 5th grade at KIPP Academy of Opportunity in Inglewood, and I finally ended up at New West Charter Middle School where I hope to teach for a very long time. At New West, I teach 6th grade ELA, Study Skills, and Language Lab. In my free time, I enjoy SCUBA diving, hiking, yoga, traveling, reading (of course!), and playing peek-a-boo with my son Lewis. I am looking forward to another terrific year! I truly feel honored to work with the amazing students and staff we have at New West.

As a child I used to line up my stuffed animals in my room and teach them Math and vocab, so teaching has truly been a lifelong passion of mine! This is my 4th year teaching and have previously worked at Culver Middle School teaching 6th grade, at University High School teaching 9th grade Honors and ESL, 11th grade American Literature, and most recently, at New Roads Middle School teaching 6th grade Humanities, Connections, and an Ethics and Peace Workshop. I earned a BA from Colorado University at Boulder in Creative Writing and received my Master's Degree and teaching credential from Pepperdine University.

I have a strong passion for any type of music (yes even country!) and have been a songwriter for many years (no, not country). I play guitar and piano, and in college sang in an A Capella group called "On the Rocks." I love hiking, writing, being with my friends and family, baking, singing (I even auditioned for American Idol!) and (oddly) cleaning! The cleaning part has definitely changed since I was growing up... sorry Mom and Dad! I am thrilled to be joining the New West team and look forward to building a classroom community bursting with fun, learning, determination, growth and creativity!

Subject: Science

My name is Brandi Turnbow. I teach sixth grade science here at New West. This will be my 8th year at New West and my 11th year teaching. I grew up in Salt Lake City, Utah, and moved to Los Angeles in 1998. I love earth science and environmental science. I have a master’s degree in education with a focus on science from California State University Northridge.  I enjoy outdoor activities, such as: snowboarding, surfing, beach volleyball, rock-climbing, camping, and hiking. I also enjoy gardening, cooking, and watching/playing Jeopardy. I have two dogs and one cat who are all super old (they are all over 100 years for their respective breeds). Mostly I just enjoy, enjoying life!
